High Adventure and Venturing

This past year (Summer 2010) some of our Scouts participated in our first High Adventure Camp,Maine High Adventure. We had two crews participate, one for a 6 day excursion and the other for a 9 day excursion in the North Central Region of the untamed wilderness of Maine...

This year, (2011) our Troop is embarking on Florida's Sea Base High Adventure Camp and we were just informed that we have been selected for a slot at Philmont High Adventure Camp for 2012...

Regardless, we have some pretty interesting adventures  locally and around the Mid-Atlantic region as well... Check our our Galleries of Outings and Events...

Venturing is either:

  1. a sub-organization of the Boy Scouts of America who operate in coed troops that are geared towards more challenging adventures
  2. a patrol that is formed inside an existing Troop made up of older Scouts who focus on more challenging adventures
  3. or a ad hoc patrol of an existing scout troop formed on a intermittent or temporary basis to participate in a singular activity that requires more advanced skills, or more maturity or a larger physique...
    • This is how we participated in the Maine High Adventure Activity... as a temporary "Crew" as they call it...
Our troop participates in option three (3) which allows our older Scouts to particpate in their own diverse patrol AND to occasionally split off from the group for these more challenging activities...

- One excellent example was our Whitewater Rafting Trip...
  • the older larger Scouts went on the Middle Yock River in class 2 - 4 Rapids
  • while our younger smaller scouts went to the Upper Yock River for class 1-3 rapids
At the end of the day all of the Scouts re-grouped into their normally diverse patrols, pitched their tents, made dinner and swapped their stories back in their regular patrols...

We also do this with our Dual Trek Expeditions on Backpacking Trips ...explained more fully here...
