Backpacking & Hiking

Our Troop has interest in Hiking and Backpack camping...

One Trip was in April of 2010... it was a little cold but very doable... on this trip we broke the Troop up into two groups...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This event was what I call a Dual Trek Expedition - so it one counts as both a day hike (for the younger Scouts) and a backpack camping weekend ( for the older, more experienced, and stronger Scouts)...

  • Group 1 (Regular Patrol) was made up of freshman Scouts who were not ready for an overnight Backpack camping trip with a pack that could weight as much as they did....
  • Group 2 (the Temporary Venture Patrol) was made up of our older more experienced Scouts who were ready for the higher challenge of a full backpack camping experience...

We begin all together, and at the half way point we had lunch together. After lunch the Temporary Venture Patrol continued on to the overnight campsite while the Regular Scouts Patrol returned to the hike's staging point and we done for the day.
  • We have found that this is an excellent way to teach the younger scouts some of the basics of backpack camping and slowly build up their endurance for the time when they are ready to participate in their first full backpack camping trip.
    • More importantly the younger Scouts have a great time without over taxing their abilities...

This is related to our temporary Venture Patrol Method which is explained in more detail here... (The temporary Venture Patrol members are members of permanent patrols and come together for more difficult excursions intermittantly.)

Here a few pictures of the neat scenery and wildlife we experienced.... (This show will Autoplay)

Another Backpacking trip was a rather cold and wet one in October of 2009... the Scouts learned some valuable lessons about staying warm and safe in the cold inclement weather... Because of the  inclement weather fore casted we did not have the younger Scouts join us of the Dual Trek.

Fortunately, this was a rare occurrence... most of our backpack trips are much less challenging...

In May of 2009 we had a backpack camping trip on the Maryland Section of the Appalachian Trail.
